3 Tips for Caring for Your Eyeglasses

There’s nothing better than finding the perfect pair of eyeglasses. And there’s nothing worse than when those frames get broken or the lenses get scratched. To keep your favorite pair of glasses in great working condition, follow these three tips and enjoy your eyeglasses longer.

Caring for Eyeglasses Tip # 1: Clean Lenses Daily

Having dirty eyeglasses can be a pain in the neck — literally. Dirty lenses can cause unnecessary eye strain that can lead to headaches and sharp pains in your head and neck. By simply cleaning your eyeglasses every day, you can avoid these problems.

Cleaning your glasses lenses isn’t always as straightforward as you may think. For example, you never want to wipe your lenses when they’re dry, since any dirt or debris on the lenses could cause scratches. Instead, use a cleanser made specifically for cleaning eyeglass lenses. Or, you can use regular tap water and alcohol-free soap to keep your lenses clean.

In addition to using soap and water, you want to be sure to hold your eyeglasses by the bridge of the nose when cleaning them. Doing so will help you avoid any bending or breaking during the process.

Caring for Eyeglasses Tip # 2: Set Them Down With Care

Be aware of where you’re setting down your eyeglasses when you set them down for a moment. Here are three common mistakes people make when taking off their eyeglasses for a short period of time.

  1. Laying eyeglasses lens-side down. Always set down your eyeglasses lenses-up in order to avoid scratching.
  2. Placing eyeglasses on a sink or vanity. Keep eyeglasses far from where you’re getting ready, since things like hair spray or perfume could damage any anti-reflective coating.
  3. Leaving eyeglasses on the dashboard of a car. The windshield of a car will act like a magnifying lens, which could warp eyeglass lenses and/or frames.
  4. Putting eyeglasses on your head. Putting your glasses on your head can misalign the frames so they no longer fit correctly.

Setting down your eyeglasses carefully will help you avoid unnecessary harm to your favorite eyeglasses.

Caring for Eyeglasses Tip # 3: Store Eyeglasses Safely When Not In Use

If you won’t be wearing your glasses for a longer period of time, store them in a hard-shell case that fits your eyeglasses. This will help protect the lenses from scratches, as well as prevent any bending or breaking of the frames while they’re not in use. You may consider getting a few cases for your nightstand, bathroom and purse, just to make sure you have it when you need it.

Keeping your eyeglasses as good as new, for as long as possible, will help keep you looking and feeling great.
